How much smaller?

Phone cameras record at a high bitrate so every frame looks sharp, which makes files much bigger than they need to be for sharing. Re-encoding with modern settings removes most of that extra weight while the picture still looks the same on a phone screen.

Before

58.5 MB

After (Balanced)

9.6 MB

Measured with our own 30-second 1080p test clip, recorded at 16 Mbps like a typical phone video and compressed on Balanced. Results depend on the content: busy, fast-moving scenes compress less.

How to compress a video

  1. Choose your video

Drop a file onto the box above, click to pick one, or paste it. MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV and AVI all work.

  2. Pick a compression level

Balanced suits most videos. Need the file under a limit? Pick a size such as Under 25 MB and the tool fits the video to it.

  3. Compress and download

Click Compress video, wait for the progress bar to finish, then download your smaller MP4.

Why use this video compressor

  • Private by design

Compression runs inside your browser. Your video is never uploaded to a server, so nobody else can see it.

  • Free, with no watermark

There is no account, no daily limit and no logo stamped on your video. What you download is yours.

  • Works on any device

Use it on Windows, Mac, Chromebook, iPhone or Android. Nothing to install — a modern browser is all you need.

  • Plays everywhere

You get an H.264 MP4 with AAC audio, optimized for fast start, so it plays on phones, TVs and every social app.

Which settings should I choose?

Light keeps the most detail and gives a moderate size reduction. Use it for videos you plan to edit again or watch on a big screen. Balanced is the default and the best choice for sharing: the quality loss is hard to notice on a phone, and the file usually shrinks a lot. Strong squeezes the file as much as possible and works well for screen recordings, long clips and email attachments.

Lowering the maximum resolution is the other big lever. A 4K or 1080p video scaled down to 720p is often a fraction of the size and still looks sharp in a chat app. The tool never upscales: if your video is already smaller than the limit you pick, its resolution stays the same, and vertical videos keep their shape.

Compressing for WhatsApp, email and Discord

WhatsApp shrinks videos again when you send them as a video, so a file that already looks good at a smaller size arrives in better shape. Before you share, compress it on Balanced with the maximum resolution set to 720p. If quality matters more than speed, attach the video as a document instead: WhatsApp then sends the original file, up to 2 GB.

Gmail accepts attachments up to 25 MB; anything larger is sent as a Google Drive link instead. Choose Under 25 MB and the tool fits the video to that size, lowering the resolution only if it has to. If the video is too long to look good at that size, the tool tells you, and sending a link is the better choice.

Discord and other chat apps also limit the size of each file, and the limit depends on your plan. Choose Under 10 MB to stay within even the strictest limits. Trimming the video to the part you need saves the most space, because the file grows with the length of the clip; most phones can trim a video right in the gallery.

Good to know

Because everything happens on your device, the speed depends on your computer or phone. A short clip takes seconds; a long 4K video can take several minutes, so keep the tab open until it finishes. The first time you compress, your browser downloads the video engine once, which takes a moment on a slow connection.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. There is no sign-up, no limit on how many videos you compress and no watermark on the result.

No. The video is processed by your browser on your own device. It is never sent to VivClip or anyone else.

Slightly, but on Light or Balanced the difference is hard to see on most screens. If you need the best quality, choose Light and keep the original resolution.

There is no fixed limit, but very large files (over 500 MB) can be slow or run out of memory, especially on phones. Lowering the resolution helps.

Most common video formats, including MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV, AVI and M4V. The result is always an MP4 that plays almost everywhere.
